BALASORE, ODISHA, JULY 15 – The 20-year-old student died after self-immolating due to ignored sexual harassment complaints, prompting arrests, suspensions, and a Rs 20 lakh compensation announced by Odisha's Chief Minister.
- Bhubaneswar, July 15, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP system of forcing an innocent daughter to set herself on fire, calling it “an organized murder by the system”.
- Earlier this month, she filed a complaint with the internal complaints committee on July 1 before she set herself ablaze at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore after her harassment complaint was ignored.
- Following the tragedy, the government suspended and arrested Samir Kumar Sahu and Dilip Ghosh, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced Rs 20 lakh aid for the family.
- In a scathing response, Dharmendra Pradhan condemned Gandhi’s remarks as “cheap politics” reflecting a “petty mindset”, while Naveen Patnaik called the sequence “institutional betrayal” bordering on premeditated injustice.
- Following the political storm, the opposition parties called for a statewide bandh, and their youth and student wings held protests at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
