Gas company NAM has been given final permission to continue extracting gas from a smaller field near the Groningen village of Warffum for another eight years. It has been agreed that gas extraction will be halted if an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 or more occurs. In the event of an earthquake of 3.0 or more, the field will be closed immediately, writes responsible minister Sophie Hermans in a letter to parliament.
