Family files $50M lawsuit after Quebec CEO, son killed in helicopter crash
- The estate of Stphane Roy, the late founder and ex-CEO of Savoura, filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit in Quebec Superior Court against Robinson Helicopter Company Inc. Following a July 2019 crash that killed Roy and his teenage son Justin Roy Sguin.
- The lawsuit stems from the July 2019 crash of a Robinson R44 helicopter, manufactured by the defendant, in a wooded area near Lac Valtrie, Quebec, approximately 220 kilometers northwest of Montreal, after Roy and his son were returning from a fishing trip.
- The downed chopper was discovered 14 days after Stphane Roy and Justin Roy Sguin were reported missing after failing to return to Ste-Sophie, Quebec.
- The Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigated the crash and issued a March 2021 report attributing the cause to the failure of a main rotor blade, while Robinson Helicopter Company President and CEO David Smith stated the company looks forward to addressing discrepancies over what caused the crash in Quebec Superior Court.
- Initially filed in California in July 2021, Robinson Helicopter sought to move the case to Quebec, a request affirmed by the California Court of Appeal in January 2025, and the estate is seeking $25 million in compensatory damages, with Daniel Roy, Stphane Roy's brother and the executor of the estate, stating the family is determined to uncover the complete truth behind the deaths.
