Ex-Sherman Oaks man who worked as a movie producer and accountant charged in suspected $12 million fraud
David Raymond Brown allegedly used over $12 million from film and COVID-19 testing scams to fund a Ponzi-like scheme and personal expenses, prosecutors said.
- On Wednesday, David Raymond Brown was arrested in South Carolina and charged in Los Angeles federal court with 21 counts including nine wire fraud, 10 money laundering, and two identity theft charges.
- Prosecutors say the scheme, beginning in December 2021, caused film production companies to pay Hollywood Covid Testing LLC for unprovided testing services using false invoices through August 2025.
- Prosecutors say Brown used investor cash to divert more than $970,000 to Untitled SLA / Patty Hearst film payments, buy a 2025 Mercedes‑Benz G‑Wagon and three Teslas including a 2024 Cybertruck, and cover mortgage and home remodeling including nearly $99,000 for a pool installation.
- Brown remains in federal custody as the FBI and IRS Criminal Investigation unit continue probing, he has a detention hearing Thursday at 10 am ET and an arraignment in the coming weeks in downtown Los Angeles.
- Prosecutors say David Raymond Brown inflated his résumé using another's IMDb profile, faced multiple investor lawsuits, and the Los Angeles Times covered allegations against him in 2023.
