Former Minister Nnaji Pleads Not Guilty To Certificate Forgery Charges
The anti-graft agency says six charges follow a two-year probe into alleged forged degree and NYSC certificates and false information submitted during his confirmation.
- On Monday, former Minister Uche Nnaji appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja to face trial for alleged certificate forgery, with Justice Joyce Abdulmalik presiding over his arraignment.
- A two-year investigation by PREMIUM TIMES revealed Nnaji forged his UNN and NYSC certificates submitted to President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Senate during his 2023 ministerial confirmation. He was arrested July 1 at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
- The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission filed six criminal charges against Nnaji, alleging he received approximately ₦29.5 million in salary under false pretenses. Counts include presenting a false degree certificate and false National Service documentation.
- Nnaji pleaded not guilty to all charges, and Justice Abdulmalik granted him bail of ₦20 million with one surety who must be a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 15. His international passport was ordered deposited with the court.
- Trial proceedings are set to resume on September 21, 2026, for commencement of evidence. Nnaji has denied all allegations of wrongdoing regarding the academic documents he presented during his ministerial confirmation.
