Mamata donates ₹5 lakh broom for Jagannath temple, participates in yagna ahead of inauguration
- On April 29, 2025, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, contributed a gold broom and took part in a yajna as part of the preparations for the inauguration of the newly constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha, scheduled for the following day.
- The inauguration follows a three-year project funded by the state government at a cost of ₹250 crore to build a 213-foot-tall temple replicating the 12th-century shrine in Puri using pink sandstone.
- Security has been tightened in Digha with deployment of at least 800 police personnel, NDRF units, drone surveillance, speed boats, and over 100 CCTVs to manage large expected crowds and prevent disruptions.
- Banerjee praised the temple’s artisans and design, calling it "a pride for Bengal and the entire country," and hopes it will become an international tourist and pilgrimage destination fostering peace and harmony.
- The temple’s opening holds cultural and political significance, attracting priests and representatives from various faiths while sparking some opposition allegations about funding and quality but promising spiritual upliftment for Bengal.
