Death Toll From Southeast Asia Floods Reaches 600

Monsoon rains and tropical storms displaced nearly 148,000 in Indonesia and killed over 590 across Southeast Asia, with many still missing amid ongoing rescue efforts.

  • On November 30, regional reports show floods killed 303 people on Sumatra and at least 123 in Sri Lanka after Cyclone Ditwah, authorities reported.
  • Meteorologists say the storm system, including Cyclone Ditwah, intensified rainfall after effects began on Nov 24 and landfall on Nov 26 triggered record rainfall.
  • Local agencies report nearly 44,000 displaced people and nearly 3,000 homes damaged as V. S. A. Ratnayake said, `I think this could be the worst flood in our area for three decades.`
  • The government responded by declaring a state of emergency, deploying more than 20,000 troops and accepting aid from the Indian Air Force IL-76 with 80 NDRF personnel, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying, `We stand ready to provide more aid and assistance as the situation evolves`.
  • The Disaster Management Centre warned more rain was forecast as Cyclone Ditwah moved toward India, the Kelani River breached on Nov 29, and officials said the death toll is expected to rise.
