Devastated Villagers Prepare for New Battle over North Yorkshire Asylum Centre Plans
North Yorkshire Council leader Carl Les says the rural site is unsuitable and warns the plan could strain policing and other public services.
On Thursday, the Government announced plans to use RAF Linton-on-Ouse to house asylum seekers as part of a scheme accommodating 3,750 people across three Ministry of Defence sites.
The site was previously considered in 2022, but that proposal was abandoned following local opposition and a legal challenge from the former Hambleton District Council.
North Yorkshire Council leader Cllr Carl Les called the plan "the wrong proposal in the wrong location," while Professor Olga Matthias said residents were "utterly and completely gobsmacked."
Councillor Marc Goddard warned the village of 700 people faces "crazy" impacts from housing 1,200 men at the derelict site with limited rural infrastructure.
Border security and asylum minister Alex Norris defended the move, stating the Government intends to close asylum hotels ahead of fresh immigration reforms arriving in Parliament next week.
