Canadian man with epilepsy who died in ICE custody was flagged for health concerns

FLORIDA, JUL 23 – Johnny Noviello, 49, with epilepsy and other health issues, died after poor health and medication refusals during detention, ICE reported in a recent review.

  • Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old Canadian man, died on June 23, 2025, while in ICE custody at a federal detention center in Miami, Florida.
  • On May 15, ICE arrested Noviello at a probation office in Florida; earlier in 2023, they had admitted to distributing opioid painkillers, resulting in a 12-month prison sentence.
  • He had multiple health conditions including a seizure disorder and hypertension, reported feeling sad and depressed, refused full medical evaluations, and began declining care by late May.
  • Medical staff found Noviello unresponsive at 12:54 p.m. on June 23, began CPR and used a defibrillator, but he was declared dead at 1:36 p.m.; the cause of death remains unknown and remains under investigation.
  • ICE notified Canadian authorities, who confirmed awareness but cited privacy, and the death highlights ongoing concerns as approximately 55 Canadians remain detained and seven people died in ICE custody in 2025.
