Byrne removed as Drogheda United co-chairperson

On Monday, US-based Trivela Group removed Sinn Féin TD Joanna Byrne from her position as Chairperson and director of Drogheda United Football Club, citing a "breakdown in the trust and confidence."
Tensions began last month after Byrne urged a boycott of Ireland's UEFA Nations League games against Israel; Trivela insisted the removal was "unrelated to anyone's specific political or moral views."
Byrne disputed the conflict of interest narrative, noting she had previously consulted Trivela regarding her political roles and calling the removal a "cold, underhand move" coordinated without her consultation.
Following the dismissal, Benjamin Boycott will serve as sole Chairperson, with the board now consisting of Boycott, Marc Koretzky, Barton Lee, and CEO Rian Wogan; a local director will be appointed in due course.
Byrne, appointed three years ago as the first female chair of a League of Ireland club, pledged to "continue to elevate" Drogheda United and the League of Ireland more broadly at every opportunity.
