Ex-Code of Conduct Tribunal Chair Danladi Umar Sent to Kuje Prison
Justice Peter Kekemeke ordered Umar held in Kuje prison after he pleaded not guilty, as prosecutors alleged N11.5 million in illicit contractor payments.
- On Thursday, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama remanded former Code of Conduct Tribunal Chairman Danladi Umar to the Kuje Correctional Centre after he pleaded not guilty to a four-count corruption charge.
- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charged Umar with abuse of office, alleging he received illicit payments from contractors, which contravenes Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
- Prosecutors allege Umar directed a contractor to pay N2.43 million for his daughter's tuition at Baze University and collected N5.5 million for painting the tribunal headquarters in 2021, plus N6 million on January 25, 2024, for digitizing records.
- Defence Counsel Sunday Edward requested bail, but EFCC Counsel Christopher Mshelia opposed the immediate release, leading Justice Peter Kekemeke to adjourn the bail hearing until July 15 while ordering the defendant to remain in custody.
- The court will reconvene on July 15 to hear arguments on the bail application, which will determine whether the former chairman remains detained or is released pending further trial proceedings.
