What Was Stolen From Louvre Museum?

Thieves completed the heist in seven minutes, stealing nine royal Napoleon-era jewels including a crown with over 2,500 diamonds and emeralds, authorities said.

  • At about 9.30 am, eight royal jewels from the Napoleon collection were stolen from the Louvre Museum's Galerie d'Apollon on Sunday, 19 October.
  • Arriving in a flat-decked truck, the thieves used an extendable ladder and cut through a window to enter Galerie d'Apollon before escaping on motorbikes.
  • Among the pieces stolen was an emerald-and-diamond necklace given to Empress Marie Louise and Empress Eugénie's crown with eight gold eagles, 1,354 brilliant-cut, 1,136 rose-cut diamonds, and 56 emeralds.
  • Investigators are analysing CCTV and forensic evidence, while no arrests have been made and police investigators have about one week to recover the stolen objects, art detective Arthur Brand warned.
  • The heist exposed the vulnerability of public collections, recalling the Mona Lisa theft in 1911, amid reports security staff earn minimum wage and faced cuts last week.
