Ascension Wisconsin Reaches New Agreement with UnitedHealthcare

The new multi-year contract ensures uninterrupted in-network access for UnitedHealthcare patients at Ascension Wisconsin facilities, securing care for thousands after a contract lapse.

  • Ascension Wisconsin announced Tuesday, Oct. 14 a new multi-year agreement with UnitedHealthcare effective immediately and retroactive to Oct. 1, restoring coverage at its hospitals, clinics and outpatient facilities.
  • A contract lapse that began Oct. 1 left thousands of patients in limbo after earlier this month the two sides failed to agree over pay rate increases.
  • Patients who received care between Oct. 1 and Oct. 13 will be billed at in-network rates after 13 days without coverage, impacting roughly 2,000 Milwaukee city workers, Ascension Wisconsin spokesperson Mo Moorman said.
  • UnitedHealthcare said the deal covers employer-sponsored and individual commercial plans, Medicare Advantage including Group Retiree and DSNP, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plans in Wisconsin, serving more than 1,700,000 members and 40,000 providers.
  • Daniel Jackson, Ascension Wisconsin CEO, said securing fair reimbursement supports caregivers and ministries across Ascension's nonprofit Catholic health system in 16 states; UnitedHealthcare also negotiates with Michigan's Bronson Healthcare, facing possible out-of-network status January 1, 2026.
