‘Are they being fed?’ Thousands of students lose school meals during teachers strike

The strike has closed about 2,500 schools and paused meal programs, leaving over 700 students daily without food, non-profits say.

  • On Oct. 6, 51,000 teachers walked off after rejecting a government offer including a 12 per cent pay raise and hiring 3,000 more teachers, amid disputes over wages and support.
  • The Mustard Seed non-profit had been making between 600 and 800 lunches a day but now makes around 15, while Hope Mission partners with five Catholic schools where about 200 to 250 students receive food bags daily.
  • Jared Jorstad said, `One family in particular that I know, the mom hadn't been able to eat for a couple days... her food was going to her kids during the strike,` and Ryan Baker said, `Unfortunately, all of the schools support currently have their breakfast programs paused.`
  • Education students say practicums are on hold and they still need required weeks to graduate after teachers walked off on Oct. 6, with Haley Roberts and Jillian Gulli's practicums paused.
