Ann Widdecombe: police believe former MP was attacked almost 24 hours before being found dead
The 78-year-old former Conservative MP and media personality was discovered at her Dartmoor home after an attack police believe occurred nearly 24 hours earlier.
Devon and Cornwall Police believe Ann Widdecombe was attacked at her Haytor home on Wednesday around 12:30pm, and the 78-year-old was found dead on Thursday after sustaining serious injuries.
A former Conservative MP for Maidstone and the Weald, Widdecombe later joined the Brexit Party as an MEP and served as spokeswoman for Reform while gaining fame on Strictly Come Dancing and Celebrity Big Brother.
Widdecombe missed a scheduled guest appearance on Channel 5's Matt Allwright show on Wednesday afternoon, failing to respond to contact attempts after appearing on TalkTV that morning.
Police released a 26-year-old British man from custody on Saturday after arresting him in Newton Abbot on Friday; Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said the investigation is 'moving at a significant pace.'
Assuring the community that police do not 'believe there is a wider risk to the public,' Longman urged anyone with information to contact authorities or Crimestoppers anonymously via the major incident portal.
