8 Family Members Among Those Killed In Fiery Crash On Georgia's I-85: Reports

Kane Hammock faces multiple charges including eight counts of vehicular homicide after rear-ending a family minivan, causing a fiery crash that involved six vehicles, authorities said.

  • Just south of mile marker 147, eight people inside a Dodge minivan died after being rear-ended by a tanker semi-truck on Monday, Oct. 13, in Jackson County.
  • Georgia State Patrol said the semi-trailer struck the family's van from behind after following too closely, and the National Transportation Safety Board and GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team opened a safety investigation.
  • Jeff Rogers, Jackson County Deputy Coroner, confirmed the victims were all from the same family, ages two to forty-two, including Kenia Ramirez, Darwin Ventura, and Sonia Maribel Ramirez.
  • Authorities arrested Kane Aaron Hammock, 33, of Gainesville, and charged him with eight counts of second-degree vehicular homicide and one count of second-degree vehicular feticide, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said.
  • The community and multiple responding agencies are assisting victims and animals while families mourn; Furkids Animal Rescue’s van carrying 37 cats was involved, with two missing and one kitten hospitalized as of Oct. 14.
