Construction to begin at Padeswood plant after UK govt decision

The Padeswood plant will capture about 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, eliminating 95% of emissions and supporting more than 200 jobs during its construction and operation.

  • This week, the UK government announced backing for Heidelberg Materials UK’s Padeswood cement plant near Mold in North Wales, slated to become the world’s first carbon-neutral factory with construction expected shortly.
  • Cement production accounts for roughly 8% of global emissions, and capturing CO2 from cement processes is regarded as the only viable option to decarbonise the sector.
  • Simon Willis said the new facility will capture around 800,000 tonnes a year, and when Padeswood Plant’s systems are operational in 2029 it will eliminate around 95% of emissions, with CO2 piped into Liverpool Bay transportation and storage network.
  • Officials say the projects will remove 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 each year and secure 500 skilled clean energy jobs in Flintshire and Cheshire, equivalent to four million petrol cars or 400,000 from this site.
  • The government has pledged nearly £22 billion to develop carbon-capture clusters and announced £9.4 billion at the spending review, but cost estimates range from 50-200 euros per tonne as similar facilities are planned across Europe.
