Wisconsin Supreme Court refuses to release voter records sought by conservative activist
The court said the records are not public and ordered Walworth County to release them only with birth dates and case numbers removed.
On Tuesday, the Wisconsin Supreme Court rejected an attempt by conservative activist Ron Heuer and the Wisconsin Voter Alliance to obtain guardianship records for identifying potentially ineligible voters in the presidential battleground state.
Heuer and the WVA filed lawsuits in 13 Wisconsin counties in 2022, part of broader efforts to cast doubt on the integrity of the 2020 presidential election outcome.
In a 5-2 ruling, the court's liberal majority and conservative Justice Brian Hagedorn declared the records not public, rejecting attorney Erick Kaardal's argument that privacy concerns could be balanced through redaction.
Walworth County attorney Sam Hall argued that verifying ineligible voters requires releasing names and addresses, effectively precluding redaction; the court intervened after two lower appeals courts issued divergent rulings.
While Trump won Wisconsin in 2024 by about 29,000 votes, this case stems from the 2020 election where Biden defeated Trump by nearly 21,000 votes; no pending challenges to 2024 results exist.
