Liberalism has long been distrustful of the referendum for many reasons. Yet the resort to an institutional practice abandoned for 20 years should rally their votes, not only for the sake of good democracy but in the name of the very deep inspiration of liberalism, in the face of the current drifts of state power. The referendum did not have a good press among the liberals.
