US Striker Balogun Says a Yellow Card, Not Red Card, Would Have Been ‘Fair’ at the World Cup
Balogun was sent off after VAR reviewed a foul on Tarik Muharemovic, and the United States still won 2-0 despite only one other yellow card.
On Wednesday, July 1, United States striker Folarin Balogun received a red card during the team's 2-0 World Cup victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara, California.
Brazilian referee Raphael Claus faced criticism for failing to control the match, as players were repeatedly pushed and stomped on throughout the physical contest.
Before Friday's practice, Balogun said a yellow card would have been fair for the "purely accidental" contact, while experts questioned the video assistant referee protocols used.
Balogun will serve an automatic one-game suspension and miss Monday's round-of-16 match against Belgium, as FIFA rules provide no appeal process for the penalty.
USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino must now select a replacement, with Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright emerging as the likely candidates to start against Belgium.
