The islands in the far north of Europe have for a long time been no longer concerned with coal production, but rather with geopolitical interests. The economic future is uncertain.


In Spitsbergen, a chapter on industrial history ends: with the closure of the last coal mine, the settlement of Longyearbyen loses its biggest employer. Russia's strong presence in the archipelago is also challenging for Norway. The treaty that allows the Kremlin to do so has been in effect for exactly 100 years, and therefore the king came from far away Oslo – with a clear message.
