What to Know About and How to View August's Full Moon
UNITED STATES, AUG 7 – The Sturgeon Full Moon peaks just before 4 a.m. ET on August 9, named for the fish commonly caught during this seasonal event, NASA said.
- On August 8, the Sturgeon Moon will appear shortly after sunset and will reach its fullest phase at 3:55 a.m. Eastern Time on August 9.
- This full moon occurs near lunar aphelion when the moon is farthest from the sun and is named for the sturgeon fish once abundant in North American waters.
- The National Weather Service forecasts mostly clear skies with lows around 63-64 degrees on August 8 and 9, supporting good visibility of the moon and nearby planets.
- On August 11-12, the planet pair most luminous in the night sky will appear less than one degree apart, coinciding with the active period of the Perseid meteor shower, which reaches its maximum on August 12-13.
- Observers can enjoy the bright Sturgeon Moon this weekend before the next full moon, known as the Harvest Moon, rises on September 7.
