China Signals US Could Restore Preferential Trade Privileges for Hong Kong
The move could restore Hong Kong’s special trading status after U.S.-China talks and follows Treasury action that delisted some sanctioned officials.
On Friday, China confirmed the United States allowed its Executive Order on Hong Kong to expire, ending the 2020 order that revoked the city's special trading status.
President Donald Trump signed the order in July 2020 after Beijing imposed a national security law, arguing Hong Kong lacked sufficient autonomy to justify separate treatment from mainland China.
The Treasury Department stated Friday that the national emergency expired, delisting some sanctioned individuals; however, Hong Kong leader John Lee and predecessor Carrie Lam remain sanctioned under a different act.
Beijing welcomed the move as a "positive shift in the U.S. policy," with the Commerce Ministry noting the decision aligns with understandings reached during recent bilateral trade talks.
The reversal could warm ties ahead of Jinping's expected visit to the United States later this year, marking a step in fulfilling consensus reached during trade negotiations in Madrid.
