Weight-Loss Jabs Could Minimise the Symptoms of Asthma
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 24 – An analysis of over 60,000 UK patients found weight-loss jabs improved asthma control in obese individuals despite only modest average weight loss of 0.9kg, researchers said.
- Researchers found that weight-loss jabs such as Mounjaro could help minimise asthma symptoms in obese people after analysing 10,111 on GLP1-RAs versus 50,555 not on them, showing potential benefits beyond weight loss.
- People with obesity and asthma are often resistant to steroid treatments, and Professor David Price said: `GLP-1s work on inflammatory responses in the airways in a different way.`
- Follow-Up results showed that weight-loss jabs led to greater weight loss and improved asthma control, with Professor David Price attributing benefits to modest 0.9kg weight loss despite the follow-up period.
- According to Prof Alan Kaplan and colleagues, weight-loss jabs warrant consideration in managing asthma among obese patients, as research suggests that GLP1-RAs have benefits on asthma control in people with obesity, and this information should contribute to the discussions around the decision to use these drugs.
- According to NICE, eligibility for weight-loss jabs could expand to over three million Brits, and researchers say more study is needed to understand how these drugs improve asthma control.
