US warships arrive off coast of Haiti
USS Stockdale and two Coast Guard cutters bolster security off Haiti amid uncertain leadership and election threats, the U.S. Southern Command said Tuesday.
- On Tuesday the USS Stockdale arrived off Port-au-Prince, joining USCGC Stone and USCGC Diligence , U.S. Southern Command said.
- Following last week's vote to oust Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime, Haiti's council has led since 2024 amid ongoing political uncertainty and sanctions on three of its five members.
- Antoine Rodon Bien-Aimé, former member of Haiti's Lower House of Deputies, said all council members must step down, criticizing that `They did not give results` and `They did not respect their accord, what they signed.`
- With elections planned for the summer, U.S. Southern Command said `Their presence reflects the United States' unwavering commitment to Haiti's security, stability and brighter future`, as gang violence threatens the process.
- Ahead of the scheduled transition on Saturday, the United States sent a warship to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, while members of the Transitional Presidential Council continue discussions about leadership.
