US Sends Direct Humanitarian Shipments to Cuba with Catholic Church Aid
The U.S. pledged $3 million in disaster aid to Cuba, delivering food and essential supplies directly through the Catholic Church to bypass government interference.
- On Jan. 14, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the first direct humanitarian shipment to Cuba that day and another on January 16, part of $3 million in aid routed through the Catholic Church in Cuba.
- Hurricane Melissa battered the region, leaving Jamaica, Cuba and Haiti with severe damage and acute humanitarian needs as flooding forced evacuations in Granma Province on Oct. 31, 2025.
- A U.S.-supported humanitarian flight will depart from Florida carrying food kits including rice, beans, oil, sugar, plus water purification tablets, storage containers, household essentials, and solar lanterns, while a commercial vessel will deliver additional assistance within weeks.
- A senior State Department official warned Cuba against interference and Jeremy Lewin said `This is our hemisphere...`, while Cuba's foreign ministry called the shipment "opportunistic" but accepted it.
- Last year the administration moved USAID functions under the State Department after cuts included funding for Catholic and faith-based humanitarian groups, while India also sent medical and humanitarian aid.
