U.S. approves ’emergency rescue’ plan to import Marineland’s whales and dolphins
The plan sends up to 28 belugas to U.S. aquariums and two to Spain after Marineland said it could no longer care for them.
- On Wednesday, a U.S. consortium announced the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration approved an "emergency rescue" to import 30 beluga whales and four dolphins from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont.
- The shuttered Niagara Falls facility is up for sale and struggling to fund animal care, following 15 whale deaths at the park over the past four years.
- Five facilities will receive the animals: Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, SeaWorld locations in San Antonio and San Diego, and Oceanografic Valencia in Spain.
- Ottawa endorsed the transfer plan last month, and the American consortium expects to arrive in Canada soon to assess the animals' health as part of the relocation process.
- Marineland officials welcomed the authorization, stating the relocation serves the best interests of the whales, which are the last such captive marine mammals remaining in Canada.
