US aircraft carrier enters Middle East region, officials say
The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group arrived to enhance U.S. defense and deterrence amid Iran's crackdown on protests, with nearly 6,000 deaths reported by rights groups.
- On Jan 26, 2026, the Nimitz-class carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers arrived in the Middle East under U.S. Central Command, which said the group promotes regional security and stability after being redirected from the South China Sea more than a week earlier.
- After Iran's crackdown, Washington redirected ships from the Asia-Pacific region, with President Donald Trump warning last week that an "armada" was heading toward Iran.
- Escorts to the carrier include Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., USS Spruance and USS Michael Murphy, which carry hundreds of missiles including Tomahawk cruise missiles, while the Pentagon also deployed fighter jets and air-defense systems to the region.
- U.S. officials said the deployment expands America's capacity to defend forces in the region, Iran's foreign ministry warned on Jan 26 of a "comprehensive and regret-inducing response," and the UAE declared it will not permit its territory for attacks on Iran.
- The move significantly increases U.S. firepower in the short term with carrier air wings and strike-group capabilities, adds thousands of additional U.S. service members, and leaves the Western Pacific temporarily without a U.S. carrier.
