India approves Apple-supplier Foxconn's $433 million chip joint venture in bid to boost industry
- India's Union Cabinet approved a $433 million joint semiconductor plant by Foxconn and HCL Group near Jewar airport, Uttar Pradesh, on May 14, 2025.
- This project arises from India's push to build a domestic chip ecosystem and reduce foreign dependence, amid Apple's strategy to diversify manufacturing away from China due to trade tensions.
- The facility will initially function as an assembly and testing center before expanding into full-scale manufacturing of semiconductor components that help control screen visuals in devices such as smartphones, laptops, cars, and other electronics.
- Information Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the facility is expected to handle tens of thousands of wafers monthly and produce about 36 million chips each month, creating roughly 2,000 jobs while enhancing India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and its role in the global supply chain.
- The plant's launch by 2027 will mark India's sixth semiconductor fab, expected to significantly cut import reliance and advance the country's semiconductor mission to become a global chip player.
