KAHAWATTA, SRI LANKA, JUL 28 – Two suspects were remanded for the abduction and murder of a youth in Kahawatta, with investigations ongoing into the violent crime, police said.
- On Monday, Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, former commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, was arrested by the CID and remanded until July 30 at Polgahawela magistrate.
- His arrest comes after investigations into the 2010 disappearance of a 48-year-old man under his role in the Directorate of Naval Intelligence, linked to allegations against Wasantha Karannagoda during the Tamil separatist war.
- At UN Human Rights Council sessions, rights bodies pressed for investigations into wartime abuses, with a UN panel estimating up to 40,000 civilians may have died during the Tamil separatist conflict.
- Investigators reopened the 15-year-old abduction case after a detective recorded Ulugetenne’s statement, and the abductee alleged an illegal detention centre operated under his watch.
- Britain sanctioned Karannagoda in March over alleged abuses, but Sri Lanka dropped charges involving at least 11 victims in October 2021, with court records showing they died in navy custody.
