Trump signs funding bill into law, ending record-long government shutdown
- On Wednesday night, President Donald Trump signed legislation that reopens the federal government, ending a 43-day shutdown shortly after the House of Representatives voted 222-209 to send the measure to him.
- The standoff began in late September when Congress missed the Oct. 1 funding deadline, with a central impasse over expiring health care tax credits while House Republicans passed a short-term funding measure to Nov. 21.
- The package includes a three-bill minibus funding through next September, reinstates thousands of laid-off government employees with back pay, and restores full funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program serving more than 40 million Americans.
- The deal omits an extension of enhanced ACA subsidies, a choice that could push premiums higher for more than 20 million Americans next year, while Federal Aviation Administration flight reductions of 4% and 6% snarled airports nationwide requiring days to recover.
- Tucked into the measure is a provision that allows senators to sue over Jan. 6 phone records, affecting eight GOP senators, amid political backlash from House and Senate Democrats.
