We are 44 days from Election Day, and this week’s politics offered plenty of evidence that the midterm campaign has entered a new phase: Democrats are gaining ground in national polling, vulnerable Republicans are distancing themselves from the president on some issues, and Congress has largely cleared out of Washington with major questions about war, artificial intelligence, trade and the Epstein files still unresolved.
