Woman who faked cancer and defrauded charity she worked for jailed
Claire Alderton, 48, was sentenced to two years in prison on June 19 at Portsmouth Crown Court after pleading guilty to fraud by false representation against George's Rockstars charity.
Alderton secured a trusts and foundations fundraiser role in June 2024 using two fabricated references and fake emails to deceive the charity during the hiring process.
In December 2024, Alderton falsely claimed she had been diagnosed with cancer to stop working; the charity then contacted her supposed referees via LinkedIn and confirmed the references were fake.
Co-Founder Amy Shaughnessy described the actions as "truly abhorrent," calling the fabricated cancer diagnosis to the mother of a child who died of Leukaemia a "profound betrayal" of public trust.
PC Emma Thomas from Hampshire Constabulary's Central Fraud Unit welcomed the conviction, stating that targeting the charity sector for personal gain constitutes an "appalling crime" warranting custodial sentences.
