Nigeria: Army Deactivates 19 Illegal Refining Sites in Niger Delta
- Between May 15 and 22, Nigerian Army troops deactivated 19 illegal oil refining sites across Niger Delta states including Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom.
- This military campaign originated from ongoing Operation DELTA SAFE aimed at curbing crude oil theft, environmental sabotage, and protecting Nigeria's strategic oil assets.
- Troops destroyed numerous refining infrastructure including 45 cooking ovens, 37 storage tanks, and seized over 589,000 litres of stolen crude and refined products while arresting 51 suspects.
- Major General Markus Kangye said the operation is part of the commitment to eliminate criminal enterprises harming oil assets and the economy to protect livelihoods and the environment.
- These operations reflect Nigeria's intensified efforts to reduce losses exceeding $3 billion annually caused by oil theft and militancy that undermine the Niger Delta’s security and development.
