Tinubu Signs NIMC Act 2026 Into Law

The law strengthens digital trust, data protection and cybersecurity, and gives NIMC a legal basis for a national public key infrastructure.

  • President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the NIMC Act 2026 at the Presidential Villa on Friday, modernizing Nigeria's digital identity framework. Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote called the event a defining moment in the country's identity management history.
  • Odusote said the Act closes a gap left by the 2007 Act, which governed identity management unchanged for nineteen years. She called the new law "a bold leap into the future" as the digital landscape evolved rapidly.
  • The Act establishes a robust National Public Key Infrastructure and strengthens personal data protection. Odusote stated it "introduces critical innovations that respond to the realities of today's digital world" while reinforcing cybersecurity measures.
  • Empowered as the Root Certificate Authority, the Commission will authenticate government documents and support digital certificate issuance. Provisions ensure vulnerable populations gain access to financial and social opportunities through legal identity verification.
  • Odusote expressed gratitude to the National Assembly, the Speaker, and the Honourable Minister of the Interior for supporting the legislation. She pledged the Commission's commitment to implementing the Act with professionalism, transparency, and high data protection standards.
