Three Royal Navy staff dead after helicopter crashes into Devon field
Investigators are examining wreckage and flight data as the Royal Navy asks for privacy for the bereaved families.
On Wednesday, a Royal Navy Merlin Mk4 helicopter crashed near Sourton Down, Devon, killing three crew members: Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, Petty Officer Owen Green, and Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher.
Defence Secretary John Healey described the victims as "dedicated and highly valued members of their squadrons who embodied the best of our Armed Forces." Gayson served with 846 Naval Air Squadron; Green with 845.
Fisher was Britain's only serving female Royal Navy commando, having successfully completed the 16-week All Arms Commando Course—an achievement very few women have accomplished to date.
General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, head of the Navy, expressed deep sadness, saying the crash "will come as a huge shock to all in our naval community." The Royal Navy requested privacy for families.
The Merlin Mk4 helicopter was completely destroyed in a field during the training exercise, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fatal crash.
