On Budget Day, purchasing power figures are lavishly distributed. Before the budget negotiations, Finance Minister Eelco Heinen stated that purchasing power was paramount. It's always a challenge for cabinets to ensure that the purchasing power figure in the Budget Memorandum looks just a little bit better than the estimates they work with in the summer. This often involves tinkering with decimals.
The purchasing power projections in the budget memorandum only increase distrust in politics. This is according to Reinier Castelein, chairman of the De Unie trade union, in response to the budget memorandum. "De Unie has long disbelieved in generic purchasing power projections because they always focus on model households. They don't fit anyone," he says.
