Ovechkin scores 887th goal to move within 8 of breaking Gretzky's record
On Saturday, the Washington Capitals defeated the Sharks 5-1 in a game played at a sold-out SAP Center.
The Sharks were dominated in the first period, being outshot 17-3, and never recovered from their slow start.
Alex Ovechkin, playing for the Capitals, scored his 887th career goal, which was his 34th of the season, at the 10:54 mark of the third period, while Macklin Celebrini also scored in the third period for the Sharks, marking his 21st goal of the season.
Following the Sharks' poor performance in the first period, Coach Ryan Warsofsky replaced goalie Alexandar Georgiev with rookie Georgi Romanov for the final two periods, and defenseman Vincent Desharnais stated, "I just think we did it ourselves."
The Sharks' loss to the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals marks their fourth defeat in five games, while Ovechkin needs seven more goals to tie Wayne Gretzky atop the NHL's all-time goal scoring list, and the Sharks are scheduled to practice three more times before playing the Hurricanes.
