Latvia urges NATO to bolster Baltic air defence after Russian incursions
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics called for NATO to adopt Ukraine-like tactics after about 20 Russian drones breached Baltic airspace earlier this month, officials said.
- Edgars Rinkevics, speaking to NATO's military committee, called on Saturday to increase protection of the Baltic States and transform air policing into an air defence mission.
- Earlier this month around 20 Russian drones entered NATO airspace, prompting NATO jets to shoot some down; just over a week ago Estonia reported three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated its airspace for 12 minutes.
- Baltic officials warn they still need more protection, and Lithuanian Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene said earlier this month Vilnius prepared a position paper to add ground-based air defence assets, sensors and detectors.
- NATO, which decides by consensus among its 32 members, has yet to change the mission but launched Eastern Sentry after the Poland incident to strengthen eastern defences.
- The Latvian president described the incidents as part of a continuing pattern of provocations, and Russia disputed that its jets violated Estonia’s airspace or intended to hit targets in Poland.
