Taliban release US citizen after visit by hostage envoy, Qatari mediation
- On Sunday, Amir Amiry, 36, detained in Afghanistan since December 2024, was released and headed back to the United States, photographed with Sebastian Gorka and Adam Boehler.
- After months of negotiations, diplomats secured a breakthrough over the weekend that led to Amir Amiry's release, making him the fifth U.S. citizen freed this year through Qatar's mediation.
- Taliban officials identified the freed man as Amir Amiri, and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi thanked Qatar while saying detained foreigners are not viewed politically.
- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the release, saying `I want to thank Qatar for helping secure his freedom` and noted additional Americans remain unjustly detained in Afghanistan.
- Earlier this month Adam Boehler visited Kabul to pursue prisoner-exchange talks, while Qatar's role as U.S. protecting power helped broker meetings and secure releases.
