Druze-Bedouin Clashes Flare up Again After Government Forces Pull Out of Southern Syria
SWEIDA, SYRIA, JUL 18 – At least 594 people, including 154 Druze civilians, have died in sectarian clashes as Syrian forces return to restore order amid a fragile ceasefire collapse.
- On July 16, 2025, Syrian security forces arrived in the western countryside of Sweida to quell clashes, the Interior Ministry said.
- Heavy clashes erupted on Friday between Druze and Bedouin fighters, the ceasefire had briefly held earlier this week, after a Druze merchant was abducted.
- The UN estimates nearly 600 killed and around 2,000 families displaced since July 13, including 154 Druze civilians.
- An Israeli official said Israel agreed to allow limited entry of Syrian forces into Sweida for 48 hours, as Bedouin civilians fled and tribes mobilized nationwide.
- Meanwhile, the UN refugee agency called for unhindered humanitarian access for all sides.
