The damage caused by the collapse of the Birch Glacier on 28 May amazes even the glaciologists. The villagers, who have lost everything, are already thinking of rebuilding Blatten, notes this report published by the British daily "The Guardian".

A massive avalanche of rocks, ice and mud triggered by the collapse of part of the Swiss mountain Kleiner Nesthorn that destroyed the village of Blatten is an unprecedented natural disaster likely to cost hundreds of millions of dollars, the Swiss Insurance Association said. Experts say the event also serves as a stark warning about a warming planet.
