Student sports in the Netherlands are at risk. Student sports facilities are no longer allowed to claim the university contribution. This could make a sports subscription more than three times as expensive. "That harms students and is at odds with all sorts of other ambitions that the government itself promotes," say the universities.
The University Sports Centre (USC) and the cultural student centre CREA fear for their continued existence if no more money comes from The Hague. Minister Eppo Bruins of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) no longer wants to contribute to university sports and cultural activities because it would create 'unfair competition'. Students, universities, colleges and sports organizations are concerned about "the continued existence of student sports and student sports centers," they report Tuesday. Due to new rules from the Ministry of Education, "annual subscriptions locally could increase by hundreds of euros per year," they warn.
