States Sue Trump Administration over Health Care, Education
UNITED STATES, JUL 22 – The coalition argues the new immigration verification rules threaten funding for critical social programs serving millions, including Head Start and community health centers, risking widespread service disruptions.
- A coalition of 20 states and the District of Columbia sued Monday, led by Rhode Island, Washington, and New York, to block new federal immigration benefit restrictions.
- On July 10, the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Labor and Justice issued rules requiring immigration status checks, generally not enforcing before Aug. 9.
- According to the state Department of Justice, more than $43 million in substance abuse and mental health block grants are at risk, while the rules took effect with minimal notice and also impact lawful visa holders and U.S. citizens.
- The coalition is asking the court to vacate the rules and restore long-standing practice, while Kaul and other attorneys general argued they violate the APA and misapply PRWORA.
- The coalition requests a preliminary injunction, while the lawsuit warns of a 'chilling effect' on vulnerable U.S. citizens and lawfully present immigrants, and HHS detailed 13 new programs now subject to restrictions.
