Could a Special Session Come by Saturday? Lawmakers and Governor Walz Scramble to Wrap up Budget Bill
- Governor Tim Walz and Minnesota legislative leaders are negotiating a possible one-day special session by Saturday to complete the $66 billion state budget.
- The special session was called after lawmakers missed multiple self-imposed deadlines following the conclusion of the regular legislative session on May 19, amid a closely divided Legislature and ongoing disagreements.
- Key unresolved issues include health care access for undocumented adults, transportation funding, and a disputed tax bill involving a $93 million revenue diversion.
- Walz credited the bipartisan budget agreement to extensive, cooperative discussions and acknowledged that all parties made concessions to achieve a compromise.
- If the budget is not approved by the beginning of July, a partial government shutdown may occur, resulting in layoff notices being issued to thousands of state workers, including a second notification planned for June 9.
