- On Monday , the Supreme Court of India ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the Karur stampede that killed at least 41 people and formed a three-member committee led by Justice Ajay Rastogi to monitor it.
- Faced with conflicting judicial orders and suo motu action, the matter reached the apex court after Madras High Court on October 3 ordered a Special Investigation Team and TVK and affected families challenged the approach.
- Police estimated turnout was 25,000 despite permission for around 10,000, while preliminary findings cited poor crowd management and lack of drinking water, injuring 146 persons.
- A monitoring committee will include two Indian Police Service officers from the Tamil Nadu cadre, non-natives, and the Central Bureau of Investigation must submit monthly progress reports to the committee.
- Handing the investigation to the CBI aims to secure a fair, impartial inquiry free from administrative or political interference, while the incident fuels a political storm in Tamil Nadu with the CBI expected to register a fresh FIR and take over materials.
