Pakistan resumes forced expulsions of 1.4 million Afghan refugees despite UN concerns
PAKISTAN, AUG 3 – The Pakistani government criminalized Afghan refugees with expired Proof of Registration cards, forcing over 1.4 million to return amid warnings of legal and humanitarian breaches by the UN.
- Ordering the expulsion on August 3 in Peshawar, the Pakistani federal government targeted over one million Afghan nationals with Proof of Registration cards, affecting 1.4 million whose legal status expired at the end of June.
- Amid its anti-refugee campaign, the new order nullified earlier assurances by Safron, based on the July 31 Special Regulatory Order, which declared PoR cards expired as of June 30.
- Authorities in Pakistan said Monday authorities, under the Foreigners Act of 1946, empowered police, district administration and prison authorities to detain PoR cardholders without judicial review and resumed forced deportations.
- The UNHCR spokesman said, `Forced returns could breach the principle of non-refoulement`, highlighting human rights concerns over Pakistan's deportation actions.
- According to a June UNHCR report, at least 1.2 million Afghans have been forced to return this year, risking refugee lives and regional stability.
