Republican Thomas Tuberville Wins Election for Governor in Alabama
The former Auburn football coach and U.S. senator defeated Democrat Doug Jones in a rematch, securing the governorship in Alabama's closest gubernatorial race in 24 years.
Republican Tommy Tuberville won the Alabama governor's race on Wednesday, defeating Democrat Doug Jones after the Associated Press declared him the winner at 1:36 a.m. EST.
Tuesday's election served as a rematch of the 2020 U.S. Senate race, where Tuberville defeated Jones, who previously served as Alabama's junior U.S. senator from 2018 to 2021.
Tuberville secured victory in what appeared to be the closest Alabama gubernatorial contest in 24 years, though Jones has not yet conceded the race.
Declaring victory to supporters in Auburn Tuesday evening, Tuberville said, "Winning is not an accident, it is a decision." He prepares to succeed term-limited Governor Kay Ivey.
The governor-elect plans to reduce the state workforce, expand Alabama's CHOOSE Act voucher program, and cut the grocery tax to improve affordability for families.
