In Syria, residents celebrated on Friday 6 June Eid al-Kebir, the most important religious festival in Islam, for the first time since the fall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Thousands of faithful gathered in the historic Omayyad mosque, located in the heart of the capital Damascus. The opportunity for hundreds of families separated by exile to gather, for the first time, after years of separation.
