Municipal leaders and provincial officials discuss expanding mental health beds and coordinated regional support to address homelessness and housing challenges in B.C.
- This week, municipal leaders from almost 190 local governments are meeting in Victoria, British Columbia to focus on street disorder, homelessness and mental health while lobbying higher governments.
- Housing pressures are being driven by provincial housing legislation allowing multiple units on single-family lots, raising costs for water, sewer and roads, complicating local planning and requiring a long-term infrastructure plan.
- The province appointed Dr. Daniel Vigo in 2024 and announced two secure facilities plus plans to build more than 400 mental-health beds by modernizing 280 beds and adding more than 140.
- Delegates pushed for a union-sponsored resolution urging the provincial government to coordinate a regional homelessness response and increase funding, while municipal officials used the conference to press ministers for action.
- Scheduled speakers include Premier David Eby, who will discuss last year's pledge to prioritize involuntary care, after the B.C. Supreme Court granted about 7 square kilometres to the Cowichan Tribes.
